For World Alzheimer’s Month, I’m sharing a personal photography project that explores my Grandad’s journey with dementia, and the shifting perception of time that comes with it. Conversations with him often move seamlessly between the present and decades past.
Stories of youth, friendships, and joy that feel both immediate and distant. Through reimagining moments from his early life; walking the pier with friends, dancing, playing games, I wanted to reflect the beauty of memory, regardless of when it occurred. The work celebrates joy as something timeless. The fun we have now and the happiness we look back on are equally valuable.
Though my Gran passed a few years ago, I hope my Grandad’s memories of her and their life together remain vivid in his mind, filled with warmth and light. Ultimately, this project is a tribute to living fully, remembering joy, and cherishing the moments that endure beyond time.
I want to thank Dawn for supporting this journey and working so hard with Annette and Morag to get it so perfectly produced; Fiona for supporting with casting; the incredible cast, especially Fran and Dexter, who were beautifully themselves throughout; and the whole crew and lighting support from Gripvan.
