Twins have always been a source of inspiration to photographers, featuring in some of the most iconic images of recent times. But the way that Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark or Roger Ballen have photographed them – in black-and-white, side-by-side, facing straight on to the camera – emphasises the uncanniness of two identical, or nearly
identical, subjects in the frame.

In his series, Will Douglas takes a completely different, much softer, more contemporary approach. In muted greens and red tones, his warm, delicate images channel the almost telepathic positive energy that flows between twin brothers Karlon and Kevin, an inseparable Peckham-born creative duo, who founded Mission Statement Magazine together.

Will had originally booked the studio for a campaign but when the talent had to reschedule, he’d decided to use the opportunity to do this test shoot, an experiment with lighting, composition and colour that would feed into his editorial and commercial work. There’s a dynamic flow to the shots, a visual rhythm, which reflects the magic connection between the twins – each unique but perfectly in sync.

I thought it would be fun to work with twins, to see how they reacted to the camera. They always had half an eye on the other one, making sure that they were kind of keeping in sync.
