Original Flava is a return home, in the largest sense. A brand founded by brothers Craig and Shaun, their mission is to expand the understanding and appreciation of Caribbean food. Matt was commissioned to shoot their debut cookbook, which involved an introduction to the family at their home in South London, including the Matriarch, the legendary Nanny.
Having connected so well with the family, Craig called Matt to offer the opportunity to join him and Shaun in Jamaica, to document their trip for the book.
It was a special and emotional trip, seen through Matt's signature light and shade; one that encapsulated joy but also deep reflection into their families past on the island. It's a past that has been deeply impacted by colonialism, yet simultaneously creating a culinary legacy that influences Craig & Shaun's relationship to food today.
As Craig and Shaun stood on the land that nourished generations before them, Matt worked with them to help tell their story. Together they captured the beauty and abundance of Jamaica: an abundance of joy and hope, despite its painful history of produce, as well as an abundance of generosity, of kinship and kindness. Original Flava offers recipes and a relationship with food inspired by generations that came before them.
