Matt Russell travelled to Italy with Joe Trivelli and Joseph’s father, who was born there, to shoot the imagery for his book, Modern Italian Cook.
The trip had a layer of poignancy as Joe’s paternal grandmother had recently died. Joseph’s Nonna was his culinary mentor, teaching the River Cafe co-head chef to cook as a young boy. Her legacy is there in the shots of Joseph’s hands skillfully shaping fresh pasta on a flour dusted table or instinctively feeling for the finest of the oranges piled up on a local market stall. Taken in her home and around the village where she’d lived, Matt’s nostalgic, sun-blushed imagery traces Joseph’s cooking journey right back to its origins.
