Jess was commissioned by Huck magazine to document the Black Fish collective; a grass roots organisation dedicated to connecting and preserving people from the Afro / Caribbean diaspora’s ancestral connection to fishing and the sea.

By focussing her lens on the amazing work of the collective, Jess enlivens our perspective of fishing in the UK; a traditionally white, heteronormative and masculine space. The images offer possibility, as Black Fish continue educating minorities and local people on the joys of fishing, and writing a new narrative on what the UK fishing community looks like.
