In 2022 the news came that the Soul Cap had been approved by FINA. Before this, the Olympics had said that the cap, which is specially designed for swimmers with afro hair, was not allowed in competitions. Alice Dearing, the first Black swimmer to represent Team GB at Olympic level, spoke out in praise of the ruling.
Nike commissioned Jessica as creative director and photographer on a shoot with Alice for Wonderland. Conscious of recent discussions around whether monuments to colonisers and slave traders should come down, Jessica wanted to represent Alice as an icon – part mythical sea creature, part grand statue. Visually, she channeled Helmut Newton’s work with Lisa Lyon in a showcase of softness combined with strength and endurance.
