The City of Angels. Ephemeral, hazy, fleeting.

James' commission for New Order magazine peers into the underbelly of LA; a city so often seen but rarely understood. A fashion editorial that also tasked him with creative direction, James created scenes that looked familiar but felt unknown. At the centre of the shoot is a singular idea, how can you experience a city in a photograph?

Inspired by Philip-Lorca diCorcia's seminal work Hustlers, in which diCorcia shot male escorts for the same fee they charged for their services, James honours the same weight of character. In various scenes, James imbues his models with a similar sense of melancholy, sinking into the heavy yet piercing LA light.

What follows is a vignette of dreams chased but rarely realised.
