"Family has been a thread in my work from the very beginning. The first proper project I shot when I was 19 was about my father. Over the years it's threaded much of my work together, from young refugees in London starting their own families to a project about young men becoming fathers. It matters to me.

‘A Model Family’ started as a project to celebrate the modern model and their family. However as I began to shoot it, it became apparent to me, that it was more interesting understanding what family means to my sitters. Encompassing more than traditional nuclear or biological setups, it gave me a new appreciation of my own family."

Here James's camera meets people honestly but warmly. A sense of home is carried through to the viewer, where beds, sofas and people are simultaneously being made.

"I'm very grateful and appreciative of the people who very kindly let me into their family homes, took time to sit with me and talk about what they call their family. A few of the models from the project featured here are: Karan, Haribella, Oduenyi, Leelah, Lily and Mikhael"
