When James was asked by GQ to create a series on modern car shows, the result was always going to be beautiful. But nestled underneath that, is a story about the passion of people and the joy of sharing what you love.
Pulling up to 5 car shows, what can sometimes feel dated or stuffy is recast under his lens. James approached the project with film: a conscious decision to stay present in each moment rather than reviewing shots. No lingering here, time moves on. And for its finish, he used Hockney-inspired joiners to reimagine the visual language of car photography.
With a focus on inclusiveness and pride of the people behind the wheel, the shows accelerate into the present. The result balances people and polish. His skilled use of light lets the chroma and shine of the cars do the heavy lifting, as we are forced to acknowledge the beauty of something unapologetically manmade.
