Hormonal fluctuations bring continuous changes throughout life for those who are menstrual, perimenopausal and beyond. But for Valentina, Sophie and G, these changes have been seismic.
For Valentina, PMDD has entered every corner of her life, including her artistic creations. Emily documents how she is meeting the symptoms head on, carving out a retreat in her home and building strength in the face of something so debilitating.
An endometriosis diagnosis, followed by a serious warning of infertility at 21, early induced menopause at 38 and three babies in between, Sophie’s been on a rollercoaster ride of risk, pain and hope. Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder sufferer G’s relationship with her body has evolved from self-punishment to nourishment.
This series photographed by Emily Scarlett Romain is a collaboration with Bleed On It, a collective giving voice to experiences once considered shameful, taboo or unimportant in a world where pain and treatment of women is often under resourced and misunderstood.
