In 2019, a job brought Owen Harvey to the coastal town of Leigh-on-Sea. The seaside was like a world in microcosm with a kind of nostalgia and romanticism that spoke to him. From then on, whenever he could, he’d walk down the shore to Southend taking pictures.
Shot after shot presented itself – the Hasidic Jewish day trippers in incongruously sombre attire, the girl who seems straight out of a ‘90s movie with her pastel roller skates and floppy hat, the retro signage, schoolkids in puffa jackets, a masked up Mad Max-style quad biker.
Owen’s images pulse with the thrill of that last long bank holiday weekend. Summer’s nearly over – but here’s one last chance to get our kicks. It feels like anything could happen.
“My work is celebratory. The seaside is a state of mind – it has an innocence about it.”
